Barrington opens conference play undefeated

Eagles top Avengers, 1-0, on Monday night

The Barrington High School boys soccer team improved its conference record to 5-0-0, earning them the top spot in Division 1 with three big wins last week against Classical, Central Falls and South Kingstown, and a victory over East Greenwich on Monday night.

Barrington and East Greenwich played pretty evenly throughout the first half, as the speedy Avengers forwards were consistently stymied by stalwart defensive performances by Eagles’ senior defenders Neil MacGillivray, Harry Turner and Luke Furnas.

The Eagles seemed to come alive in the second half, taking control of the midfield play and ultimately taking the lead on a well placed cross from senior forward Sam Faulkner to senior captain Andrew Blazewicz, who nailed an impressive shot into the top corner of the net. Senior keepers JT Celico and Luke O’Connor earned the 1-0 shutout for the Eagles.

Last Wednesday night’s game against Classical was a tight contest, as the game started slow for the Eagles, and the Classical Purple took an early 1-0 lead. However, soon after, Barrington seemed to take control, adjusting to the quick speed of the Classical turf.

Eagles’ senior Ned Shapiro responded with a floating header off the foot of Blazewicz to tie the score at 1-1, and junior Leo Caldarella scored an unassisted goal late in the first half to take the lead. The score remained 2-1 until Classical responded with a second goal late in the game to tie it up.  But the Eagles, persevered, and as the clock wound down toward a likely tie, Blazewicz sent a curving, game winning direct kick over the Purple defense directly to the head of Ned Shapiro for the second time that game to give the Eagles the 3-2 victory.

Saturday morning’s contest against the Central Falls Warriors again appeared to be an even match at the start, as the Warriors took an early lead with a quick first half goal. But the Eagles countered with two goals in the first half, with Caldarella knocking in a keeper deflection, and an additional goal from junior Max Sylvester off a cross from Blazewicz to take the lead 2-1.

The Eagles dominated the second half, with two additional goals by Blazewicz, the first of which came after a 70-plus yard punt by keeper O’Connor.  Both Barrington keepers put forth strong performances, with Celico saving a number of shots in the first half and O’Connor stopping some strong Central Falls attempts. Final score: Eagles 4, Warriors 1.

The Eagles play again at home on Wednesday night, 5:30 p.m. against the Cumberland Clippers (1-0-1).
