Barrington Majors All-Stars advance to District 2 finals

Senior Division team’s comeback bid cut short

Posted

The Barrington Majors Division All-Star baseball team will play against Riverside in the District 2 finals on Saturday.

Barrington defeated Rumford in an elimination bracket final, 12-2, and advanced to the District 2 championship. Barrington must defeat Riverside twice to win the District 2 title and advance to the state finals — Riverside has not lost a district tournament game yet.

Barrington trailed 2-0 against Rumford on Wednesday night, but scored four runs in the third inning, five in the fourth and three more in the fifth, eventually ending the game with a mercy-rule victory.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Tommy Coutant drew a walk and Anthony Fede doubled, putting runners at second and third. Finn LoVerme then blasted a double into left-field, driving in two runs. Barrington added two more runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Rumford made a pitching change in the fourth inning and Barrington capitalized with five runs.

Barrington’s Henry Alfonso continued to play well behind the plate — he has not allowed a single passed ball in the last three games. He also made a nice catch in foul territory.

Anthony Fede made a nice jumping catch at first base and Rocco DeFonseca had two key catches in left field.

Barrington will play against Riverside on Saturday at 5:45 at the Ron Silva Baseball Complex.

Seniors eliminated at States

The Barrington Senior Division All-Star baseball team lost 5-3 to Johnston in the elimination bracket final at the state championship tournament on Thursday night in Pawtucket. Barrington fell behind 1-0 after the first inning and trailed 5-1 after six innings. But in the seventh, Barrington mounted rally. With two outs, Grant Culton singled, and Eli Terrell singled. They both advanced on a wild pitch, and Culton scored on a passed ball. Matt Davis delivered a single scoring Terrell, cutting the score to 5-3. David Redmond beat out a ground ball to shortstop. Davis and Redmond then advanced to third and second, respectively, on a wild pitch. Barrington tried to narrow the score to a single run on another wild pitch, but the ball bounced back to the catcher, who tagged out the sliding Davis to end the game.
