Barrington loses a longtime public servant

Former civil defense director Vic Teixeira passes away at age 90

Vic Teixeira, a longtime resident, a well-known business owner and the former civil defense director for the town, passed away on Friday, July 6. He was 90 years old.

The owner and operator of the Texaco station on Maple Avenue, Mr. Teixeira was still doing some repair work and vehicle inspections at his shop within the last year. He bought the station 66 years ago and had lived in town for nearly 70 years.

When he first opened his station, Mr. Teixeira sold gasoline for 14 cents a gallon, and there were more than a dozen gas stations located all across Barrington. Over time, many of the stations closed but Mr. Teixeira's Texaco survived, although a few years back he had to pull the tanks out of the ground.

Mr. Teixeira was appreciated for his years of duty as the town's civil defense director.

In a recent article, Mr. Teixeira's daughter Mary shared memories of her father's dedicated service.

“Throughout the years, he left his business often to take care of emergency management issues. We, his family, knew we were expected to hold down the fort both at home and at his business to free him up to carry out the duties he had promised he would," Mary said.

His daughter said Mr. Teixeira was especially dedicated to helping the elderly, many of whom did not have family in the area.

“It was the perfect route of public service for him," said Mary. "Being the civil defense director was all about putting others first…"

Mr. Teixeira also enjoyed visiting nursing homes throughout the East Bay every Sunday for the last 25 years.

Mr. Teixeira's wife Dorothy passed away more than 20 years ago. Mr. Teixeira created the Dorothy M. Teixeira Memorial Scholarship through Community Scholarship Fund in remembrance of her.

Mr. Teixeira was a member of Holy Angels Church and daily communicant of St. Luke Church. He was a member of the Barrington American Legion Post #8 and a sports enthusiast. He also enjoyed gardening, and often tended tomato plants and other vegetables in a small garden behind his service station.

Mr. Teixeira is survived by two daughters, Mary C. Teixeira of Barrington and Dorothy A. Andreozzi of Barrington; a brother, Vincent Teixeira of Bristol; a grandson, Milos Mirkovic of East Providence, and several beloved nieces and nephews.
