The town is offering a course called “Acing the ACT.”

The course is designed to introduce high school juniors and seniors to the ACT exam, the more student-friendly, paper-and-pencil college entrance exam that is time-tested and accepted by all colleges and universities throughout the United States. The ACT can be taken in conjunction with the SAT or as a non-digital, non-adaptive alternative.

The course, which is being offered through the Barrington Recreation and Learning Department, will be taught by Cindy Kaplan of Kaplan Tutoring Services Inc. Ms. Kaplan is an experienced test prep tutor and the technical editor of 1,001 ACT Practice Questions for Dummies and English Grammar for Dummies among others. She will introduce general test-taking and reading and science strategies, while providing a thorough review of grammar and math concepts. 

Classes will take place on four Thursday evenings: Nov. 14 and 21, and Dec. 5, and 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barrington Middle School. 

A maximum class size of 15 students will provide personalized instruction. The official ACT prep book is included. Students do not have to be residents of Barrington to attend.

The registration deadline is Monday, Nov. 5.
