BHS teams were expected to vie for state championships

What could have been.

More than 70 Barrington High School senior student-athletes have been left wondering if this was the year for a division title, for an all-class selection, or maybe even a state championship.

But they will never know.

In an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus, state officials closed the schools in March and canceled the spring sports season.

Betsy Brenner, the head coach of the BHS boys tennis team, said she understands why officials decided to cancel spring sports. She knows they were just trying to keep people safe.

"But it still breaks my heart," she added.

Coach Brenner knows what this season could have been — the Eagles won the Division I state championship last year and returned this spring with a roster loaded with talent. Barrington has the runner-up in the individual state tournament last year, and the defending champs in the doubles state tournament.

"The future looks good but it's nothing compared to the powerhouse team we had last year and this year," Coach Brenner said.

The Eagles would have returned seven seniors, all of whom had been on the team together since their freshman year: Owen Voigt, Lucas Johnson, Kevin Zhu, Matthew Brenner, Andrew Barton, Aidan O'Neill and Mark Sapolsky.

"They are great kids," Coach Brenner said. "They are great kids on the court and they're great off the court."

Coach Brenner said she knows much those senior student-athletes had been looking forward to this season, for the opportunity to cap their high school tennis careers as back-to-back state champions.

"It's heartbreaking," Coach Brenner said. "All the things they are missing."

Coach Brenner said she would like to do something special for her team later this summer. She said she would like to host a singles tournament for all the team members at the Barrington High School tennis courts.

"Maybe in July," she said. "I'd like to do something to honor the seniors at that time."

George Finn, the director of athletics and student activities at Barrington High School said officials have been looking for ways to honor all student-athletes who were not able to participate in their spring sport.

"At the end of the regular season we honor our seniors at their final regular season home contest. Unfortunately, I won't be able to preside over these events in person this spring," Mr. Finn said.

"Understandably, it has been a challenging time for everyone. I have certainly missed witnessing our athletes perform on the golf course, at the tennis courts, on the field, in the gymnasium, and at track and field meets.

"Our school and community is very proud of our seniors and all of their accomplishments.

"Thank you to their families for the support they provided these athletes over the past four years."
