Barrington Books hosts signing for NE sports fans

Posted

On Saturday, July 7, Barrington Books will host Sean McAdam, author of "Boston: America’s Best Sports Town" for a signing at both bookstore locations. For over three decades, Sean McAdam has been reporting on the four pillars of New England sports: Bruins, Celtics, Red Sox, and Patriots. First, as a radio producer for “Chuck Wilson on Sports”, an afternoon drive time sports radio show which ran on WEAN in Providence in the early 1980s, then as a sports writer and media columnist for the Providence Journal.

Since then, McAdam has reported on sports for several publications including the Boston Herald, Comcast Sports.Net, ESPN.com and FoxSports.com. Currently he contributes to the relatively new subscription-based website, BostonSportsJournal.com where he is a baseball beat writer/columnist who travels with the Red Sox. He also continues to appear on the radio 98.5 “The Sports Hub” in Boston.

McAdam’s debut book takes each of the four franchises, delivers a historical primer and compelling case for why each team should be considered the best and then tops it off by focusing on four of each team’s greatest players, recounting significant trades for each of the teams, the most memorable games, and a brief look at some of their greatest rivals. Says McAdam, “My hope is there will be some newer fans who will use this as a history book and learn some more about the teams.”

Overall, "Boston: America’s Best Sports Town" delivers the nostalgia that seasoned fans crave as well as historical perspective for younger fans. The book offers a foreword by Red Sox great Pedro Martinez, full-color photos throughout and bonus sections on Boston-specific sports traditions like the Boston Marathon and The Beanpot as well as a whole chapter on Bostonian Olympic athletics and the New England Revolution.
So what makes Boston America’s best sports town? According to Sean McAdam, you start with the history and tradition: “When the American League was born the Boston Red Sox were part of it... All four teams got in on the ground floor of the origin of their respective leagues. There’s a real rich history and tradition to all four of these teams.” Continues McAdam, “Also when you look at the individual stars that the four teams have hosted, they’re not just among the standouts in Boston sports history but they are among some of the greatest in their respective sports.”  McAdam cites Bobby Orr, Ted Williams, Tom Brady and Bill Russell as Boston’s “Mt. Rushmore” of sports.

“My hope is there will be some newer fans who will use this as a history book and learn some more about the teams,” says McAdam.  And for those who have lived through the history, Boston: America’s Best Sports Town is a nice nostalgic look back at our favorite teams and sports figures.

Sean McAdam will meet the public and sign copies of his book at Barrington Books, located at 184 County Road in Barrington, Rhode Island.  from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Then from 2 to 3:30 p.m. McAdam will visit Barrington Books Retold in Garden City Center, Cranston.
