Barrington Little League’s 11U and 50/70 All Star baseball teams both won games on Monday night, June 23.
The 11U team walked off Rumford Little League in extra innings thanks to Zak Oppler’s two-run double off that banged into the Chomp sign in left field at Sherwood Field. The Barrington 50/70s won 12-2 over Bristol/Warren to move into the championship series against Portsmouth Little League.
The 11U All Stars took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Oppler reached first base on an error, driving Peter Berard home. Rumford scored two runs in the fourth inning, but Barrington tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on Ben Grossman’s line drive to center field. Barrington centerfielder Berard robbed Rumford of extra bases in the top of the sixth inning, keeping the game tied at two.
Rumford loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and scored a run on a fielder’s choice double play. With a runner on second base for the extra frame, Matthew Montecalvo led off the bottom half of the seventh inning with a single between the shortstop and third baseman, moving Rocco Coppolino to third. Zak Oppler followed that with a deep drive to left centerfield that hit the Chomp sign driving in both baserunners and ending the game with a final score of 4-3.
Barrington got a quality start from Montecalvo. Max Colantonio earned the win out of the bullpen for Barrington. The 11U team will play Bristol/Warren on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Sherwood Field.
