The Audubon Society of Rhode Island (ASRI) has been awarded $10,000 from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation National Paralysis Resource Center as part of the Center’s “Quality of Life” grants program, which supports nonprofit organizations that empower individuals living with paralysis.
The grant has been used for new automatic doors at the public entrance to the Nature Center and Aquarium at 1401 Hope St.
“We would like to thank the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Quality of Life Grants Program for this generous grant that provides access to nature and greater independence to individuals living with paralysis and mobility issues in our community,” said Jeff Hall, Audubon Executive Director. “Automatic doors allow people to access the Nature Center without needing to physically open traditional doors and are designed with a larger width to accommodate wheelchairs. Accessibility and inclusivity are priorities for Audubon, as we believe that all people deserve to experience the benefits found in nature.”
The grant program also provided funding for a trailside bench and two accessible picnic tables that will be located on the grounds.
The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improving the quality of life for individuals and families impacted by paralysis. Since the Quality of Life Grants Program’s inception, more than 3,770 grants totaling $43 million have been awarded.
