Ms Violet will explore today's lack of civility, which for many holds to be increasingly true in our lives and particularly in Election 2018. She will also consider the sources of and solutions to this dilemma.
"Has civility in politics disappeared because it has in American society at large?" Ms Violet asked recently. "Will it ever return?" There will be opportunity after her presentation for questions from the audience.
In her public life Ms Violet has demonstrated a unique ability to bridge the gaps between things spiritual, civic, legal, political and cultural. The first woman elected RI State Attorney General in the US, Ms Violet is a weekly columnist and television news commentator. She was a Sister of Mercy for 23 years.
She is said to be among the 50 most influential women in American law, along with former Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Besides practicing law, she has been a Trustee at RWU since 2007. She has written several books, including Convictions, My Journey from the Convent to the Courtroom, The Mob and Me and Dance of the Chameleon. She wrote the book for The Family, A Musical About the Mob performed at Trinity Repertory Theatre.
She is co-author of The Centurion, performed at the Manhattan Repertory Theatre in NYC and Roger Williams University. She has received over 100 awards for her community service. For over 10 years she taught at the Yale University Campaign School for Women .
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at St. Michael's Church, 399 Hope St., Bristol.
The Roswell S. Bosworth, Jr Lecture Series is presented by the Men's Club, a local organization that pays tribute to its founding member, former editor and publisher of the East Bay Newspapers, with lectures of general interest to the R.I. audience.
