Arlene Medeiros Axtell, Bristol

Mrs. Arlene (Medeiros) Axtell, of 44 Hopeworth Ave., Bristol, died peacefully Saturday, July 1, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Laurence Eli Axtell, who preceded her in death in June 2001.

Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Herculano Rocha and Julia (Almeida) Medeiros. Arlene attended Colt Memorial High School, Bristol, and worked for the Raytheon Corporation in Portsmouth, the former Dixon Corporation and the Converse Rubber Company, formerly in Bristol. Arlene enjoyed knitting and traveling, but most of all spending time with her loving family and friends.

She is survived by her five loving children, Stacy Antignano (Angelo) of Bristol, Sally L. Jamiel (Nicholas) of Odessa, Fla., Scott Axtell of Somerset, Mass., Laurence Eli “Skip” Axtell, Jr., of Miami, Fla., and Steven J. Axtell of Bristol; eight beloved grandchildren, Angelo Antignano (Melissa Harper), Julie Ann Brown (Michael), Matthew Antignano, Megan Axtell, Robert Medeiros, Sharlene, Shelley and Shawna Jamiel; nine beloved great grandchildren, Noah, Cooper, Brayden, Ian, Nicholas, Mia, Julia, Fin and Liam; her beloved sister and best friend, Lenora “Lee” Celone (James) of Bristol; and her beloved dog, Pepe.

Funeral services will be held from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, Friday, July 7, 2017, 10:30 a.m., with a prayer service at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours Thursday, July 6, 2017, 4-7 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
