The Newport County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is hosting the 40th annual National Holiday Celebration in Honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this Monday, Jan. 20. A day of events, beginning with a torch run, are planned under the theme of “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence365.”
The schedule of events is:
• 9 a.m.: Torch Run Ceremony, Patriots Park
• 9:30 a.m.: Annual Birthday Program, Thompson Middle School; Guest Speaker: Owen Hwang, Stages of Freedom
