Annabelle Sarah Elizabeth Waples Caffry, 83, passed away suddenly in her home on Aug. 17, 2020. She was born Feb. 23, 1937, in Vasey, Ontario, Canada. Annabelle was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, John Caffry. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David Waples Caffry and Margaret of Lyme, N.H.; her daughter and son-in-law, Liz Caffry Frankel and David of Lyme, Conn.; and her daughter and son-in-law, Susannah Caffry Lund and David of Charlotte, N.C.

Annabelle also leaves behind her grandchildren, William and his fiancé Fauve, Isabelle, Philip John and his fiancé Jess, Sam, Sadie, Lily, and Zoe; and great-grandchildren Atlas, Solenne, and Torin. She is much loved by her sisters, Dorothy Rumney, Peggi Diebel, Mary Jane Burnett, and Jean Swan (deceased); brothers, Keith Waples and Murray Waples; and many nieces and nephews.

Annabelle was raised on a farm in Ontario and moved to New York City after graduating from the Royal Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in Barre, Ontario in 1957. She worked as a nurse at New York Hospital and, after a brief move to Florida, returned to New York, where she met her husband John. Together, they moved often—living in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Montreal, Toronto, Nashville, and Rhode Island—while raising their children.

With each move, Annabelle dedicated herself to creating a warm, stable home for her family and to connecting with new friends. Her warmth, generosity, and strength were immediately recognized by all who met her.

Annabelle volunteered for many church and community groups, and as her children grew, she made more time for volunteer activities, including serving on the board of the Cumberland Valley Girl Scouts (now Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee in Nashville) and as president and long-time member of the Bristol Garden Club in Rhode Island. An avid decorator and gardener, her homes were often featured on local home and garden tours.

Annabelle was most proud of her cottage in Sunapee, New Hampshire, which has welcomed family and friends for more than 32 years. “The Cottage” has been the center of regular gatherings, reunions, family meals and laughter over the years, as well as temporary housing for children and grandchildren in various phases of life.

Annabelle was a devoted reader. She followed current events and politics, often encouraging lively dinner-time conversations on these subjects. In her later years, she found great joy in following the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. Her family will always remember her love of Christmas and the joy that giving brought to her.

A virtual memorial service will be held later this year. In the meantime, the family invites you to reach out and share your warm wishes and fond memories.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Annabelle may be made to Lake Sunapee Protective Association, (603) 763-2210, www.lakesunapee.org, or PO Box 683, Sunapee, NH 03782.
