Acoaxet Club recognized for environmental efforts

Club focuses on keeping fertilizer out of nearby pond

The Westport River Watershed Alliance is holding a reception Friday to recognize Keith Kruger and the Acoaxet Club for their prudent environmental stewardship of the golf course and grounds of the Acoaxet Club.

In particular, the WRWA wants to recognize the design and installation of a state-of-the-art Golf Course Maintenance Facility, recirculating irrigation system and closely monitored fertilizer application program, all of which moderate the effect of nutrients on neighboring Cockeast Pond.

Dr. Brian L. Howes, director of the Coastal Systems Program at School of Marine Science and Technology at UMASS Dartmouth said, “As part of our efforts to restore Cockeast Pond habitats, we developed a watershed nitrogen input model.  It is notable that the Acoaxet Golf Club is among the most conscientious in limiting their nutrient impacts on downstream waters of the 40 golf courses that we reviewed in the Massachusetts Estuaries Project.”

The reception will be at the Acoaxet Club at 4 p.m. on Friday July 26. Those interested in attending should RSVP to WRWA at outreach@wrwa.com, or call the office at 508-636-3016.
