ALT dedicates new Sakonnet Greenway Trail boardwalk to Maya Auchincloss

PORTSMOUTH — The Aquidneck Island Land Trust has reopened a 700-foot section of the Sakonnet Greenway Trail after replacing a worn boardwalk with a new structure dedicated to the memory of Maya L. Auchincloss.

The new “Maya L. Auchincloss Boardwalk,” located between Sandy Point Avenue and Bramans Lane, was funded primarily through the Estate of Maya Auchincloss. The project replaced an older boardwalk that had fallen into disrepair and was rebuilt with more durable, low-maintenance materials.

“We are deeply grateful to the estate of Maya Auchincloss for this generous gift,” said Terry Sullivan, ALT’s executive director. “Maya’s enduring love of animals and the natural world makes this contribution especially meaningful. The Sakonnet Greenway Trail provides a place where community members can enjoy the outdoors with their pets in every season.

"The Aquidneck Island Land Trust is proud to play a vital role in ensuring public access to these natural spaces for all to experience and enjoy.”

The Sakonnet Greenway Trail is the longest continuous hiking trail on Aquidneck Island, stretching 11 miles through pastures, woodlands, and wetlands. It passes landmarks including Glen Farm Stables, Newport National Golf Club, and Newport Vineyards.

ALT trails draw an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 visitors annually and are frequented by walkers, runners, dog owners, and horseback riders. Trail maps and updates are available here.
