Posted

Mrs. Mary Ila (Moore) Smith, formerly of Middletown and Bristol, passed away in the company of her loving family on Nov. 2, 2016. She was the beloved wife of the late Henry Battle Smith and the mother of the late David Paul Smith.

She is survived by her two daughters, Dr. M. Kathlyn Nelson (Paul) and Mrs. Mala Patricia Santos (Everett); her sister, Mrs. Doris G. Carter; and daughter-in-law, Karen A. Smith. She leave four grandsons, Kevin R. B. Smith, SSgt. Brett Y. Nelson (Desiree), USMC, 1st Lt. Conor A. Nelson, USMC-R, and Timothy E. Santos, who all firmly believe that their grandmother made the best teddy-bear pancakes and ham and cheese biscuits in the known universe.

She leaves behind a legacy of gracious Southern charm and manners to all who knew her, and a deep appreciation of all things family to her children, grandsons, and nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours, Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a time of remembrance at 1 p.m. in the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
