EAST PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced a temporary road closure of Pawtucket Avenue between Warren and Waterman Avenues for paving on Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24, another sure sign the accelerated bridge replacement project is moving well ahead of schedule.
The road closure begins at 9 p.m. Friday evening and is expected to end by Saturday morning at 6 a.m.
The paving of Pawtucket Avenue is one of the final steps in the refurbishing of the heavily-trafficked state road and the bridge there over Interstate 195.
Construction crews have been busily nearing completion of the northbound side of the bridge, approaching the end point of the project which began in late March. The existing bridge was removed during the first weekend closure with the southbound side being the first section completed. That occurred in mid-May.The original plan called for the entire span to be replaced over a 120-day period.
The completion of the project is well ahead of schedule despite some early weather woes. Work was halted one weekend in early April due to impending snow. Other days were lost because of excessive rain.
