EAST PROVIDENCE — The 2019 fall seasons for the East Providence High School sports teams began this week, including the girls’ soccer squad who recorded a dramatic victory in its Division II opener against visiting Chariho at Pierce Memorial Field.

Senior midfielder Alyssa DeOliveira potted the game’s only goal off a direct kick in the final minute of the contest to give East Providence a 1-0 win over the Chargers. From just outside the 18-yard box, DeOliveira delivered a near-perfect strike, sending the shot just inside the upper right hand corner of the Chariho net for the goal.

Senior goalie Mia Jackson and the East Providence defense delivered a clean-sheet performance, the keeper credited with nine saves.

Also at Pierce, the EPHS boys’ soccer team began its Division I regular season by playing visiting Central Falls to a 1-1 draw.

The guests scored some 10 minutes out of halftime to take the lead. The Warriors held the advantage through the bulk of second period before being called for what EPHS head coach Tony Vieira said was an “obvious” handball foul inside the 18-yard box. Ryan Moniz stepped to the spot and converted the penalty in the 74th of 80 minutes.

Townies’ keeper Andrew Mongeon was credited with 10 saves. His Central Falls counterpart Junior Teixeira Rosa made six stops.

Two other local outfits started their league slates this week, but with undesirable results.

The EPHS girls’ tennis team traveled to Middletown for a Division II match against the Islanders, losing all its matches in a 7-0 defeat.

The EPHS girls’ volleyball team played at Cranston West in its first Division I outing of the season, the host Falcons shutting out the Townies, 3-0. West won the match by the scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-23.
