Kathryn Crowley Superintendent of the East Providence Public Schools, has been selected as the 2020 Rhode Island Superintendent of the Year. Her selection by the Rhode Island School Superintendents' Association (RISSA) was announced at its General Membership Meeting on August 15 at Wanumetonomy Country Club in Middletown.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement in school district leadership, dedication to the education of all children, commitment to the community, and service to RISSA. The award was presented to Mrs. Crowley by Dr. Phil Auger, Superintendent of the North Kingston Schools and the 2019 Superintendent of the Year.

Mrs. Crowley will also be recognized by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) at its National Conference on Education to be held in Sand Diego, Calif., in February 2020.

Mrs. Crowley has served as the Superintendent in East Providence since 2015. She previously served as superintendent for Little Compton from 2010-2015.

She served as assistant superintendent for the Johnston Public Schools from 2003-2010. Prior to that she was a high school and middle school principal and also served as adjunct faculty with the education administration preparation program at Providence College.

During her tenure as Superintendent, East Providence has experienced a resurgence in student performance and district wide school culture. Of particular note is the approval of East Providence voters for a new, state-of-the-art high school. The $185 million project will be completed for the 2021 school year. East Providence also has a very extensive pre-school program begun during her tenure.

Mrs. Crowley cites the work of the great principals, teachers, and staff of the East Providence schools who have made a major commitment to improving student outcomes.

“I was hired as the superintendent but we, as a team, accomplished these things for the students and family members of East Providence,” Mrs. Crowley said.

Among the accomplishments over the last three years are revised curricula in all disciplines, expanded educational technology, and the development of plans for the new high school which will include integration of academic and career and technical programming to benefit all students. To improve the learning environment, a capital improvement project was implemented to upgrade all of the District’s school facilities.

Mrs. Crowley noted her appreciation of East Providence “Townie Pride”, which was demonstrated at its best in the community’s support of the new East Providence High School. Community support has been a critical component in improving the district’s schools.

Mrs. Crowley has been an active member of RISSA for 17 years. She has been a member of the Legislative advocacy subcommittee since its inception and currently chairs that committee. She is Vice President of RISSA and a member of its executive committee and has represented superintendents as a board member of the RI Interscholastic League.

Mrs. Crowley earned her Bachelor of Science Degree at the College of St. Elizabeth, her Master’s degree in Education Administration at Providence College and completed course work for an Ed.D in Education Administration at Nova University. She and her husband, Joe, reside in Cranston. They share four children and thoroughly enjoy their eight grandchildren.
