EAST PROVIDENCE — Seth Daly twirled a two-hitter and his East Providence High School teammates did just enough at the plate as the Townies edged a tough Lincoln squad, 1-0, in the Division I playoff opener for both sides played Tuesday afternoon, May 29, at Pierce Field.
Daly struck out three and threw 16 first-pitch strikes en route to out-dueling Lions' starter Dominic Cunha.
The eighth-seeded Townies managed to plate the game's lone tally in the bottom of the sixth. Zach Fanara drove in the run with a bases-loaded grounder. E.P. had just four hits of its own off Cunha, two each by Gatorade State Player of the Year Ben Sears and Cole Poissant. Poissant scored the run after leading off the sixth with a single.
East Providence advances to face top-seeded Hendricken in Warwick Thursday afternoon, May 31, in the next round of the double-elimination state tournament. Ninth-seeded Lincoln has a bye in the losers' bracket portion of the event, awaiting the loser of the Coventry-Cranston West contest also being played Thursday.
