PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School track and field teams vied in the 2019 State Championship Meet held Saturday, June 1, at its traditional home of Brown Stadium in Providence, the Townies finishing with 14 points on the boys’ side and two in the girls’ portion.
Hendricken rolled to the boys’ title, the Hawks tallying 134 points to finish well ahead of second-place LaSalle with 95. North Kingstown was a distant third with 44. East Providence’s 14 points placed them in the middle of the pack in 12th.
Westerly won the girls’ crown with 68 points, eight better than the runner-up from Barrington. South Kingstown was third 57. City entry Bay View was 10th overall with 19 points. East Providence’s two placed the Townies in 28th.
Boys’ notes
The quest of Anuoluwapo Ogunronbi to add an outdoor long jump title to his two indoor championships came up just shy as the senior finished second in the event with a best leap of 21 feet, 9.5 inches. Jancy Mwelwa of Central edged him out for the win with a distance of 22’3.” Ogunronbi had two jumps over 22 feet nullified by foul. He still earned eight of the E.P. points with the runner-up result.
Classmate Jason Santiago added four points for the Townies with his fourth place finish in the high jump at 6’ even. He actually shared the second-place height with two others, but was fourth based on attempts. Brandon Bolster of North Kingstown was the state champ at 6’2.”
Another EPHS senior, Jason Santiago, picked up two points for placing fifth in the triple jump at 42’.25.” Seun Filaoye of Hendricken won the event at 43’11.75.”
Of note as well, the EPHS 4x100 relay team of Ednilson Silva, Adam Marschat, Dion Hazard and Ogunronbi ran seventh overall in 44.93 seconds. Though they did not point, the quartet advanced to the New England meet because one of the top six teams from the state will not compete at regionals.
Girls’ notes
Angela Braga accounted for the lone East Providence points during the final event scored on the day. The junior had the fifth-place throw in the javelin with a distance of 112’3.” Dulcinea Burgo of Central Falls won the state girls’ javelin throw with a distance of 133’9.” Marybeth Fitzsimmons of Moses Brown was the winner in a new state and meet record time of 24.05
City resident and Bay View standout Aliya Barrows led the Bengals to their top 10 team finish. The senior was second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.01 seconds. Westerly’s Helena Hall-Thomsen won the event in 56.62. Barrows was also third in the 200, running a 25.41. Hall-Thomsen was second in 24.62.
New Englands
The top finishers in each of their respective events at states qualify for the 2019 New England Interscholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The 74th edition of the event takes place Saturday, June 8, at the Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine.
