EAST PROVIDENCE — Left dormant for the better part of a decade, it appears the former Shaw’s Supermarket location in the east corner of the Shopper’s Town Plaza on Taunton Avenue looks ready to finally have a new tenant sometime soon.

According to both city officials and local real estate professionals, the vacant cornerstone 52,000 square foot building at 575-585 Taunton Ave., will soon be converted into a Planet Fitness brand center. The space has been available since Shaw’s renovated, expanded and relocated the similarly sized area at the west end of the property, last occupied by the defunct Ames Department Store, about 10 years ago now.

Harris Krafchick, of Jobel Realty, said Planet Fitness will occupy approximately 40 percent of the available space. He said the business is expected to be open by either late 2019 or early 2020.

Renovations, as well, are currently being done to the former D’Angelo’s Sandwich Shop and H&R Block tax office on the extension also at the east side of the property. Those two operations vacated the location within the last year. Mr. Krafchick said no new tenant for the D’Angelo’s spot is imminent. The restaurant equipment is being removed and put into storage to offer greater flexibility for the retail space.

The strip mall-styled structure was originally built in 1975. It received an initial renovation in 1989. More recently the exterior of the entirety of the strip was spruced up to coincide with the opening of the new Shaw’s structure.

The strip also includes a CVS Pharmacy and a Metro PCS cellphone carrier as existing tenants. It, of course, sits opposite the current and future East Providence High School. Site work on the new building there has begun with an anticipated completion of construction for the fall of 2021.

According to the real estate listing for the parcel, it features among other key components a bus line, dedicated turn lane, property manager on site, pylon sign, signage and a signalized intersection at points on Taunton and Pawtucket Avenues.

According to city records, the building is owned by Jobel Shopperstown Associates LLC headquartered in Dedham, Mass., and was last appraised at $2,893,700. Records indicate Jobel incorporated ownership of the building in 1997. Its interests locally appear to be represented by the Providence law firm Winograd, Shine & Zacks, P.C.
