Hector Massa saved my life. Really.

Many years ago I was a directionless youth with more than a few birds on my antenna. During my years at Roger Williams I was able to unscramble myself and find my compass. Hector’s support and guidance helped to put me on the road to manhood. His many acts of kindness remain with me today as I try to conduct myself in a manner worthy of the example he set.

Once, Shirley and Hector were decorating their apartment. Several staff and students gathered to help in anyway they could. A young co-ed was present. Every one there advised the young lady to stay clear of yours truly. But Hector said, “Don’t listen to them. Bobby’s a good boy.” Well, Mary and I have been married for 33 years. Thank you Hector. You’re the best!!!

Happy Birthday!!

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
