Marina, you should attend the next CPC meeting - today at 3:30 in the Town Hall. You'll see that there are no "architectural trimmings."

The shelter design has been gutted to be little more than a large plain box. The architect sold the town a bill of goods about what he could design, just to land the job, and now the town is stuck with a building that my 7 year-old son could have drawn.

The animals do need warm, secure shelter from the elements. They also need appropriate care - separate intake for dogs and cats (to prevent disease, minimize stress to the new and in-house animals, and to secure animals with behavior issues), proper (and segregated) isolation/quarantine for animals, and appropriate exercise areas.

The cuts which are being made are KEY FUNCTIONAL ELEMENTS - drains to eliminate waste from the dog runs, sinks to wash animals that come in filthy or flea-infested, attic storage, a garage (for secure intake and safety of the ACOs)...

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
