PORTSMOUTH — The town’s Recreation Department is starting up an after-school program for children in kindergarten through Grade 8 at Portsmouth Middle School on Jepson Lane.
The program will run from 2:45-6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and offer fun activities, outdoor play, snack time (snacks provided) and homework guidance.
“Our mission is to provide academic support in a welcoming and positive environment. Our caring staff will provide a fun, safe and enriching after-school experience,” stated a flyer about the program.
After an annual $25 registration fee, the cost is $80 for the full week, $70 for four days, $55 for three days, $40 for two days or $20 for one day.
There is a 15 percent discount for all siblings, and financial assistance is available. Busing from Melville and Hathaway schools to the middle school will be provided.
Recreation Director Wendy Bulk said the program will eventually be moved to the now-vacant former Coggeshall School building on East Main Road (across from St. Mary’s Church) once “minor repairs” are completed there.
The building was the site of the Aquidneck Island Christian Academy for 14 years until this June, when it ended its lease with the town and shut down due to low enrollment.
