PORTSMOUTH — Three people safely escaped a house fire at 1 Grain Terrace Monday night.

A neighbor saw flames inside the garage of the raised ranch and tried to extinguish the fire before alerting family members, who were watching TV on the second floor.

Two adults, a child, as well as several family pets managed to get out of the house safely before crews from the Portsmouth Fire Department arrived shortly before 8 p.m.

About 30 firefighters responded to the scene, which included mutual aid from Tiverton, Middletown, and Newport.

The home sustained severe fire and water damage. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Maureen Costa, the mother of the homeowner, stated on Facebook that she was grateful that everyone was safe.

“Thank you Portsmouth fire (and) police for their amazing response. We really have the best,” Costa stated.
