Steven A. Kotze, 58, Portsmouth

Steven Alan Kotze of Anson Road, Portsmouth, was born April 13, 1961, in Hayward, Calif. He died March 7, 2020, from complication of pneumonia in Newport Hospital with his son, Steven, by his side.

He was son of the late Albert G. and Dorothy E. Kotze; brother to Pamela A. Lendrum of Bremerton, Wash.; father to Christen Baker-Bagnell of Taunton, Mass., Steven A. Baker of Portsmouth, and Jonathan M. Kotze of New Bedford, Mass. The mother of his children was Karen Baker Kotze of New Bedford, Mass. He had six grandchildren.

Being raised in a Navy family, Steve had the opportunity to live in areas from coast to coast ... returning to Rhode Island in 1971. He attended Portsmouth High School until 1977 (Class of 1979).  

Steve was very active as a kid and enjoyed anything that went fast and loud! In Florida, he joined a slot car racing team and built his own high-performance slot cars. He always loved dirt bikes, go-karts, roller coasters. In Rhode Island, he was a member of Boy Scout Troop 50 and loved camping and exploring!

Steve had natural talents in mechanics and culinary arts. He was passionate about Muscle cars and Harleys.

He worked as an assistant chef for fine dining restaurants, including The Mooring and the Black Pearl. Later, he worked food concessions for Newport Jai Alai & Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jai Alai.

He owned a delivery franchise for Vie d’France bakery.  

Later, he worked as a maintenance manager for Sheraton/Doubletree, Gold Star Property Management and worked for subcontractors on the Newport Navy Base. Co-owner of R & S Construction.

A memorial service is being planned for summer 2020.
