St. Philomena School wins teamwork award at First LEGO finals (photos)

PORTSMOUTH — St. Philomena School’s “Street Lights Done Right” team was among the award-winners at the First LEGO League Rhode Island State Championship on Saturday at Roger Williams University.

Thirty-six teams in all competed, and the judges had a difficult time determining the awards because the teams were so well-prepared and enthusiastic.

The St. Philomena team won the Core Values Teamwork award.

Teams from Aquidneck Island won several awards: second place Champions Award: 11702 AIR Strike Omega, Aquidneck Island Robotics, Newport; Robot Strategy & Innovation: 4361 Circuit Breakers, Aquidneck Island Robotics, Newport; Project Research: 9898 Aquidneck Island Robotics, Newport; and Project Presentation: 26149 Cosmic Strike, Aquidneck Island Robotics, Newport

The first place Champions Award, the first place Robot Performance Award, and FIRST Global Innovation Award went to 37524 Planet Robotics FLL, a community team from North Attleboro.

• Robot Programming Award: 19126 Team Green, Lincoln School, Providence

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
