PORTSMOUTH — Leave your car behind and hop onto a bicycle for the second annual free Portsmouth Farm-to-Farm Bike Ride on Saturday, May 11.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Middle Road will be closed to motor vehicle traffic so families, friends and neighbors can enjoy the experience of bicycling together along the four-mile route, which passes six family farms.

“Last year’s event was a such a huge success. We’re proud to host this wonderful, family-friendly event again,” said Daniela Abbott, an organizer of the event and a member of the Portsmouth Town Council. “This ride really showcases the best of Portsmouth — scenic ocean views, historic family farms, and welcoming neighborhoods. We hope this will become a cherished tradition for our town.”

Parking will be available behind the School Administration Building, at 29 Middle Road. Registration and the start will be located behind Escobar’s Farmhouse Inn, 133 Middle Road.

The ride runs for two miles down Middle Road, with a turnaround point at Benjamin Drive (about 897 Middle Road). Along the way, riders and walkers will pass six Portsmouth family farms: Escobar’s Highland Farm, DeArruda Farm, Quonset View Farm, Portsmouth Nursery, BAW Farm, and DeCastro View Farms.

Grand marshals Louis and Jane Escobar will mark the official start of the ride at 10 a.m. Members of the Portsmouth Historical Society will be along the route with information about the town’s agricultural history.

Coffee from Clements’ Marketplace will be available at registration and plenty more refreshments at Escobar’s Farm starting at 11 a.m. including Red’s Rhode Island, Flat Waves Food Shack, My Rolling Café and Rhody Fresh. There will be restrooms at Quonset View Farm and Anne Benson Stables.

Bike Newport staff and volunteers will be on hand at the start to assist with bike checks and helmet fittings, and along the route to offer assistance. Velofix, the mobile bike shop, will be there to help with any bike repairs.

In addition to the bike ride, Clean Ocean Access (COA) will be running a roadside cleanup for the duration of the event. Those who want to assist COA can pick up materials at the Admin Building.

Bike Newport said the event is possible thanks to the Portsmouth Town Council and “gold sponsor” Teri Degnan Real Estate, as well as Bristol Marine, Newport Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, EcoRI News, Newport County YMCA, Rhody Fresh, Clean Ocean Access, Aquidneck Land Trust, Aquidneck Island Planning Commission, Town of Portsmouth Public Works, Portsmouth Historical Society, Premier Landscaping, and Countryside Children’s Center.

Escobar's Farmhouse Inn is hosting the event and has donated a two-night stay for the event raffle.
