PORTSMOUTH — How’d you like to play some beach volleyball — at Glen Park?
On Monday, March 9, the Town Council will hear a request from the Parks and Recreation Commission and SURGE Volleyball to build two sand volleyball courts at the town-owned park off Glen Road.
Recreation Director Wendy Bulk, in a letter to the council, said she’d like to see the program established by this summer as part of its collaboration with SURGE on developmental and “Learn to Pay” programs in town.
“Just like basketball, baseball, soccer, and many other sports, the establishment of a feeder program is vital to the success of the high school program,” Ms. Bulk said. “The programs will provide players the opportunity to learn basic volleyball fundamentals and skills while also developing a passion for the game.”
A PowerPoint that will be presented to the council Monday shows the favored location for the two courts as just inside the park to the right — just of the main grass parking lot and north of the riding rink.
According to SURGE, the courts would incorporate a space of about 96 feet by 84 feet in area.
“Two sand courts can cost upwards of $30,000,” representatives of SURGE stated in a letter to the council. “Our fund-raising campaign has kicked off and we are pleased to say we are on track and building momentum. In addition to fund-raising, we also offer ‘learn to play,’ ‘skills’ clinics, mini-clinics and soon-to-be-scheduled summer camps. Our objective would be to commence with earth work beginning of April 2020 with final sand courts completed end of April 2020.”
SURGE said it’s difficult to find public volleyball courts in the local area — beach or indoor.
“We come to you today to change this. Not only do we want to make volleyball more affordable to all, we want to make it more accessible as well,” SURGE stated.
