Ribbon cut for new playground at Glen Park, Portsmouth

Event features visit from Santa, candy can hunt

PORTSMOUTH — The Parks and Recreation Department couldn’t have asked for a better day to officially open the new playground at Glen Park, as the mild weather Sunday drew a couple dozen tots who spun, slid and swung on the equipment.

Town Council President Keith Hamilton received the biggest — and dullest — pair of scissors to do the honors during the ribbon-cutting, while a few youngsters helped out with safety scissors.

The playground, located just inside the entrance to the town-owned park, includes a swing set, slide, seated spinners, an overhead climbing spinner, and a dome climber.

“This park is going to grow in size eventually. We chose the basics for now,” said Wendy Bulk, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department which was responsible in making the playground a reality.

Bulk thanked town administration, the Town Council, and members of the Parks and Recreation Committee for their support of the playground.

She directed visitors to cheer while the ribbon was cut. “Instead of saying, ‘Hip-hip, hooray,’ we’re going to say, ‘Hip-hip, let’s play,’” she said.

The event also featured a visit from Santa Claus, free popcorn and hot chocolate, and a candy cane hunt with goodie bags for all the children.
