Rene J. Garant, 87, Portsmouth

Rene Joseph Garant, 87, of Portsmouth passed away on Nov. 15, 2020 at Warren Skilled Nursing. He was the husband of Lorraine (Costa) Garant.   

Born in Fall River, Mass., he was the son of the late Joseph and Marie (St. Pierre) Garant.  

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Ronald Garant and his wife Linda of Tiverton, R.I.; Marc Garant and his wife Denise of Fall River, Mass.; Paul Garant and his wife Judith of Fall River, Mass., Denise Pelletier and her husband Robert of Warren, R.I., Lynn Bellee and her husband Tim of Vermont, and Judith Simons of Florida. He was the father of the late Denise Spors and his survived her husband Jerry. He also leaves behind his brother, Armand Garant, of Westport, as well as 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. 

Mr. Garant was educated in Fall River and was the owner of Garant Construction for 45 years.

His funeral services were held Nov. 23 at Notre Dame Cemetery.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
