Tyler Fleig of Portsmouth is a senior at the U.S. Naval Academy.

PORTSMOUTH — Tyler Fleig of Portsmouth, a senior at the U.S. Naval Academy, was recently named to the 2018-19 All-Academic Sailing Team by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).

The All-Academic Sailing Team recognizes collegiate sailors who have achieved excellence in national and inter-conference competition as well as excelling at the highest academic level for the 2018-19 academic year.

Honorees must be a junior or senior, have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale, and be a starter or key reserve in at least seven university sponsored regattas.

A committee comprised of representatives from conferences in the ICSA evaluates the nominated sailors. Matt Lindblad, co-head coach of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the committee chair. This year’s All-Academic Team is comprised of over 200 members. 

Mr. Fleig, the son of Rick and Carline Fleig, is majoring in systems engineering.at the Academy.

Before joining the Navy, the 2015 graduate of Portsmouth High School was a member and captain of the PHS sailing team, as well as a member of the cross-country and ice hockey teams. 

As a freshman at the Academy, he competed in six regattas as a skipper and three as a crew during his first season. Some of his finishes include a third place at the Tom Curtis Memorial and fourth place at the Charleston Spring Coed.  

As a sophomore, he competed in seven regattas as a skipper and finished third in both the Washington College Team Race and the Hanbury Trophy Team Race.

As a junior, he competed at nine events as skipper, placing second in the Washington College Team Race and had three additional regatta finishes within the top four. Mr. Fleig earned Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) and ICSA All Academic Honors. At the end of the season, he was elected team captain for the 2018-2019 season.
