Team takes undefeated North Kingstown to five sets in epic state title match
PORTSMOUTH — You’ve never seen a happier second-place team.
But you can’t blame members of the Portsmouth High School girls’ varsity volleyball team for their smiles, as their performance against undefeated powerhouse North Kingstown in the Division I championship game was as gritty as they come.
The Skippers handed the Patriots their only loss on the season back on Sept. 17 — a decisive 3-1 win in the PHS field house.
It looked like things were going North Kingstown’s way again inside the Murray Center at Rhode Island College during the championship match on Saturday. The Skippers made easy work of the Patriots in the first set, 25-11.
Portsmouth was determined not to go quietly, however. The Patriots edged the Skippers in the next two sets, 25-22 and 25-23, going up 2-1 with a chance to close it out.
The Skippers, however, battled right back. They took the fourth set, 25-19, and then the fifth and deciding set, 15-6, to win the championship trophy.
Portsmouth advanced to the finals by beating East Providence in the semifinals, 3-2.
