PORTSMOUTH — Several longstanding school track records were broken by Portsmouth High School athletes during the state championship meet at Conley Stadium in Providence on Saturday.

Kaden Kluth shattered the oldest-standing school record, running the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:58.64, which bested John Burton’s mark that had been set way back in 1980. Kluth came in fourth place in that event.

Morgan Casey won the girls’ high jump with a best effort of 5 feet, 6.25 inches. That broke a 28-year-old school record set by Bethany Meierowitz in 1993. 

Meghan Lehane broke the school record in the 100-meter hurdles first in the trials and again in the finals. The old record, set in 2011 by Kim Sullivan, was 16.04 seconds when converted to fully automatic timing. Lehane placed second in the hurdles with a time of 15.34.

The Patriots’ standout jumper and sprinter Colby Fahrney didn't have his best day ever in long jump but was still able to pull off the win, claiming both indoor and outdoor long jump state championships. His best leap was 20 feet, 11 inches.

The boys’ 4x100-meter relay team of Jack Bielawa, Sam Bielawa, John Maedke and Fahrney came in third place, running an impressive time of 43.94. 

“That is a PHS top-five, all-time 4x100 relay.,” said Shaun Horgan, the boys’ head coach. “That's a credit to all the boys but in particular sour two seniors, Sam and Jack Bielawa. They have been so focused and determined all season.”

Here are some more results for the boys:

• John Maedke took third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.41.

• Sam Bielawa came in fourth place in the long jump with a best effort of 20 feet, 2 inches. He placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, 1.25 inches. His brother Jack came in eighth in that event with a leap of 39 feet, 9.5 inches.

• Jeff Brady came in fifth place in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet.

• Kaden Kluth came in seventh place in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.08.

• The 4x400-meter relay team of Jack Bielawa, John Maedke, Jeff Brady and Kaden Kluth took fifth place with a time of 3:31.43.

The boys placed sixth as a team in the meet, which was won by Bishop Hendricken.

Here are some more results among the girls:

• Abbie Armijo tied for third in the girls’ 100-meter dash with a time of 12.66. 

• The 4x400 relay team of Armijo, Sabrina Leary, Katie Spaner and Kitty Damon came in third with a time of 4:10.81.

• Damon took fourth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.46.

• Meghan Lehane took eighth place in the long jump with a best leap of 16 feet, 0.75 inches. She came in sixth in the triple jump with a best effort of 34 feet, 6.5 inches. Teammate Katie Spaner took eighth place in that event with a leap of 33 feet, 5 inches.

• The 4x100 relay team of Armijo, Jordyn Durham, Kate Famiglietti and Lehane came in fifth with a time of 51.7.

• Maura Dennis tied for fifth place in the pole vault with a best effort of 8 feet.

• Erin O’Connell came in seventh in the shot put with a best toss of 33 feet, 3.5 inches. 

• The 4x800 relay team of Damon, Abby Gilpin, Leary and Katie Yalanis came in sixth with a time of 10:03.46.

As a team, the lady Patriots came in fifth place in the meet, which was won by La Salle Academy.
