PORTSMOUTH - Current Portsmouth School Committee member Allen Shers passed away on Friday, Nov. 5, while at Rhode Island Hospital surrounded by his family. He was 72.

Born in Berwyn, Illinois, Shers earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Brown University in 1971. He then went on to work as a real estate broker, consultant and appraiser for over 40 years and was an active member of the Portsmouth community. In addition to serving on the Portsmouth School Committee, Shers was involved with many other boards over the years, including serving as treasurer for the Portsmouth Water Board; past chairman of the Housing Committee for the Portsmouth Comprehensive Plan; and member of the Newport County Board of Realtors and Middletown Lions Club.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Rd, Portsmouth, RI. Burial will be private. A link to Shers’ obituary can be found here.
