Portsmouth Police: Two men who fled scene were later caught

PORTSMOUTH — Two men were arrested around noon at Motel 6 in Newport on Friday, Oct. 16, after allegedly fleeing the scene of a traffic stop in Portsmouth early that morning, police said.

Police stopped a vehicle driven by Masairi Rodriguez, 34, of 249 JT Connell Highway 245, Newport, at about 1:15 a.m.

They identified the passenger as Shemuel Machado, 25, of 249 Connell Highway 114, Newport, who had active warrants for his arrest, according to police. 

The Detective Division obtained an arrest warrant for the two men, and Newport Police, along with members of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshal Service, apprehended them at Motel 6. 

Mr. Rodriguez was charged with reckless driving/drag racing/eluding police, and driving without an active license. Mr. Machado was charged with violating a no-contact order. 

Both men were also charged with obstructing an officer in execution of duty, police said.

Thursday, Oct. 15

Two people were arrested in separate incidents after they allegedly used fake IDs to purchase alcohol at local liquor stores. Police were conducting liquor store compliance checks both times. At about 7:45 p.m., Maggie E. Stefanowicz, 18, of 1 Old Ferry Road (Roger Williams University), Bristol, was arrested at Ferreira’s Package Store, 1965 East Main Road. Forty-five minutes later, police arrested Brian T. Garry, 19, of 45 Greenfield Lane, Holliston, Mass., at Allen’s Wine and Spirits, 3001 East Main Road. Both suspects, whom police said provided officers with fake IDs, were charged with underage possession of alcohol, as well as unlawful drinking and misrepresentation by an underage person (both first offenses). They were issued District Court summonses and released from the scene.

Friday, Oct. 16

Jessica E. Goncalo, 35, of 381 Pine St., Fall River, was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop on West Main Road at King Charles Drive around 4:35 p.m. Police said they established probably cause to search the vehicle, and arrested Ms. Goncalo after finding narcotics. 

Taylor E. Hill, 32, of 2701 East Main Road, was charged with prostitution as the result of an investigation by the Portsmouth Police Detective Division into prostitution in the local area. Ms Hill was taken into custody following a motor vehicle stop on East Main Road at Potomac Road around 5:15 p.m., police said.

Saturday, Oct. 17

Eric L. Stewart, 30, of 6200 Post Road 27, North Kingstown, was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer in execution of duty following a motor vehicle stop for an equipment violation on West Main Road, at Twin Lanterns Cabins, around 5:50 p.m. As the vehicle came to a stop, Mr. Stewart exited and fled on foot, but was detained after a brief pursuit, police said. Police said there was also an active warrant out of East Greenwich for Mr. Stewart’s arrest. He was later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, according to police. Another person in the vehicle, James Michael-Thomas Hughes II, 36, of 91 Rosemary Drive, North Kingstown, was arrested on a 3rd District Court bench warrant, police said.

Tuesday, Oct. 20

Brennan I. Shuttle, 24, of 12 Dudley St., Newport, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) following a single-vehicle accident on Hummock Avenue at the Route 24 North off-ramp around 11:10 p.m.

Thursday, Oct. 22

Emlen P. Drayton, 29, of 1116 Wapping Road, Middletown, was arrested shortly after police went to the area of East Main Road and Oliveira’s Garage around 3:15 p.m. to investigate a report of a suspicious male. Police located the man, later identified as Mr. Drayton, who immediately fled on foot, police said. He was taken into custody shortly afterwards and charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstructing an officer in execution of duty.

Friday, Oct. 23

David L. Viveiros, 24, of 93 Gordon Ave., Warwick, was arrested on a 3rd District Court bench warrant after the vehicle in which he was a passenger was stopped for an equipment violation on Route 24 at Sprague Street around 1:10 a.m.

Cody M. Jarobski, 26, of 81 Jenkins St., Providence, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) after police pulled his vehicle over for a moving violation on Route 24 North around 5:45 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 25

Stephen J. Jackson, 57, of 95 Long Meadow Road, was charged with domestic assault (first offense) after police were called to his home around 6:50 p.m. for a report of a physical altercation. Police said the victim was a 35-year-old woman from Portsmouth. 

Monday, Oct. 26

Jorge G. Gonzalez, 34, of 1261 Church St. 21B, New Bedford, was charged with driving without an active license (first offense) after being pulled over for speeding on East Main Road at Glen Mean Road around 12:25 a.m.
