PORTSMOUTH — A 30-year-old man from Virginia was arrested last Friday, Sept. 15, and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), first offense; as well as possession of a controlled substance.

According to police, officers observed a vehicle swerving into the opposite travel lane and obstructing oncoming traffic on West Main Road, and pulled the driver over at King’s Grant around 2:30 a.m.

The driver was identified as Mohamed Magdy Abdelrahman, of 5011 Ganglion Court, Annandale, Va. Officers observed multiple indicators that he was impaired, police said. 

During a search of Abdelrahman, a clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance consistent with cocaine was found, according to police. 

Abdelrahman was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test. After being processed at the police station, he was issued a District Court summons and released.

Tuesday, Sept. 12

Leroy J. Magardo, 53, of 1148 American Legion Highway, Westport, was charged with possession of a controlled substance at about 5:10 p.m. Officers pulled him over on Route 24 North at Cedar Island because his vehicle had a broken brake light and he was following the vehicle in front too closely, police said. Officers discovered that Magardo didn’t have a valid license, and during an inventory search of the vehicle they found suspected crack cocaine concealed within a box of Newport cigarettes, according to police. He was held at the police station pending his arraignment, police said.

Wednesday, Sept. 13

Jorge Henriquez Galdamez, 31, of 42 Tum A Lum Circle, Westerly, was charged with driving without an active license, his fifth offense. He was pulled over on West Main Road around 12:30 a.m. after his vehicle was seen swerving to the left over the center lanes, according to police. 

Nicholas Dean Nadalin, 24, of 9 Church St., Bristol, was charged with DUI, first offense, following an accident at about 2:50 a.m. According to police, Nadalin was driving north on Burma Road when he lost control of the vehicle, which veered across the roadway and struck a fire hydrant near Weaver Cove. The vehicle was heavily damaged and disabled due to the crash, police said. Nadalin was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test, police said.

Friday, Sept. 15

Todd M. Gagne, 46, of 22 Sunset Ave., Portsmouth, was charged with violating a no-contact after officers responded to his home shortly before 10 p.m. The victim was a 36-year-old woman, according to police. 

Sunday, Sept. 17

Justin R. Albano, 37, of 1 South Drive, Portsmouth, was charged with DUI, second offense, after his vehicle crashed into a wooden fence and stone wall at 3283 East Main Road around 3:20 a.m., police said. Albano, who was also cited for refusing a chemical test, was injured in the crash and transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

Monday, Sept. 18

Ryan Jacob Nieves, 21, of 31 Railroad Ave., Warren, was arrested by Newport Police on a Portsmouth warrant charging him with two counts of the fraudulent use of credit cards, and larceny of under $500, police said. According to police, an investigation revealed that Nieves had stolen a wallet and used a bank card without the owner’s authorization. Nieves was located by Newport Police, placed him under arrested at about 1 p.m., police said.
