PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School football team got its first taste of competition Thursday, Sept. 3, edging host Rogers, 7-0, in an Injury Fund game.

The Patriots will get another tuneup before the regular season begins when they face Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School of Franklin, Mass., in a non-league game Thursday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Assabet Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Marlborough, Mass.

Portsmouth officially opens its season at home against South Kingstown at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.

The Patriots then travel to Burrillville for a 6 p.m. game Friday, Sept. 25, before returning home for their Homecoming game against Westerly at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
