Portsmouth man charged with domestic assault

PORTSMOUTH — A 51-year-old Portsmouth man was arrested Saturday, Sept. 25, after he allegedly struck a woman in the face at his home, police said.

Stephen P. Coleman, of 19 Mello Terrace, was charged with domestic assault after officers responded to his home to investigate a report of a female who had been struck in the face, according to police. 

When officers arrived they observed redness near the eye of the victim, a 21-year-old Portsmouth woman, as well as swelling consistent with being struck by a hand, police said. 

Here are some more recent highlights from the Portsmouth Police report:

Monday, Sept. 20

Michael T. Giarusso, 59, of 30 Howard Ave., Apt. 58, Cranston, was arrested on a Superior Court bench warrant just before 1 p.m. An officer with knowledge of the warrant observed Mr. Giarusso walking southbound in the area south of the Bradley School on East Main Road. According to police, the warrant was for his failure to appear for an arraignment on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was taken into custody, processed and turned over to Newport County Superior Court, police said. 

Tuesday, Sept. 21

Thomas S. Andrews, 34, of 231 Rhode Island Boulevard, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) after he was pulled over on Route 24 around 1:40 a.m. for swerving and committing multiple roadway violations, according to police. He was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test. He was later issued a District Court summons and released from police custody.

Friday, Sept. 24

Juliann Eigelsbach, 52, of Morgan St., Newport, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) after being pulled over on West Main Road at Bayview around 12:40 a.m. for swerving in the lane of travel, police said. She was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test. She was later issued a District Court summons and released to a sober party, police said.

Monday, Sept. 27

Farrah L. Sousa, 44, of 444 Oak Grove Ave., Fall River, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) after her vehicle was pulled over on Route 24 at Freeborn Street around 1 a.m. for committing multiple roadway violations, according to police. She was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test. Sousa was later issued a District Court summons and released to a sober party, police said.
