A 21-year-old Portsmouth man died early Wednesday morning after his car was struck head on by another vehicle that was traveling the wrong way on Route 195 in Somerset, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Police had not identified the deceased driver as of Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, the Portsmouth man was driving a 2017 Nissan Sentra in the westbound lane of Route 195 around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday when it was struck by a 2006 Volvo XC90 being driven the wrong way by another Rhode Island man.

The Portsmouth man was the sole occupant of his car, which burst into flames upon impact, according to police.

The other driver, also the lone occupant of his car, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, police said.

Massachusetts troopers are still investigating the accident, which shut down travel lanes in the area for about five hours.
