PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High cross-country teams performed admirably at the state championship meet on Saturday, with the girls taking 10th place and the boys coming in 13th.
The Lady Patriots had seven runners competing over the 5K course, with senior Gabby Sparks turning in the best time for her team: 21 minutes, 10.8 seconds. She was followed by freshman Addison Mau, with a time of 21:14.
Kitty Damon finished her senior season strong, contributing 56 points to the Patriots with a time of 21:33.47
Sophomore Katie Yalanis (21:19.84) and juniors Keira Foster (22:39.33), Morgan Levreault (23:04.97) and Libby Schult (23:41.9) are set to stand out for Portsmouth cross-country next year.
Among the boys, Kaden Kluth was the Patriots’ top finisher. He came in eighth place with a time of 16:02.
“His goal all season was to be in the top 10, so I'm very happy to see him finish off his senior year with that top group,” said head coach Shaun Horgan. “His time and place are the fastest and best place by a PHS boy at the Rhode Island State Championships.”
Kluth qualified to race at the New England Championships this Saturday, Nov. 13, in Thetford, Vermont.
Jeff Brady also ran well, placing 34th in a time of 16:53.
“That was almost a 30-second personal best and now he is one of only seven boys to ever break 17 minutes in a 5K for Portsmouth,” said Horgan.
The other top finishers among the boys were junior Kevin Sullivan (18:15), senior Chase Forch (18:18), junior Wake Zani (18:37), senior Parker West (19:15), and freshman Jack Marston (19:34).
