PORTSMOUTH — A local fencer is on her way to an elite, national competition in February.

Cora Powledge represented the Rhode Island Fencing Academy & Club (RIFAC) at a weekend fencing event that functioned as a qualifying tournament for the annual Junior Olympics (JO’s) to be held in Charlotte, N.C.

The qualifying tournament, divided by age group, was hosted by Boston Fencing Club on Dec. 14 and 15. The first day featured events for junior fencers, those aged 20 years old and under. Cora competed in Junior Women’s Foil, winning all but one bout in pools.

Moving on to direct elimination bouts, she was victorious in three rounds until the final, gold medal bout. She fought hard and collected the second-place silver medal.

The national competition in Charlotte starts on Valentine’s Day 2025.
