PORTSMOUTH — Sophomore Rafferty Dionne lifted the Portsmouth High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team to a big overtime win over top-ranked East Greenwich in Division II play last Friday at home. 

The Patriots led going into the fourth quarter, 7-5, but were outscored 5-3 in the final period, sending the game into overtime and Dionne’s ball through the net.

The thrilling win improved Portsmouth’s record to 8-1 in D-II play. The Patriots only loss thus far has come at the hands of Moses Brown, a Division I team, on April 26.

Dionne, who had three goals, two assists and six shots on goal (SOG), was selected as the player of the game for Portsmouth. 

Shane Temple, a senior, added another three goals and two assists, with four SOG. Senior Robert Mairs had two goals, one assist and six SOG.

Junor Oliver Melanson, and sophomores Hadrian Dougherty and Teddy Gersen added a goal apiece. Goaltender Jack Colna, a junior, played all 48 minutes and made 18 saves. Jonathan Cabral, a senior, led the Patriots on ground balls, recording five.

The Avengers will be looking to avenge their loss when they host the Patriots for a 6:30 p.m. game on Thursday, May 15.

Portsmouth was scheduled to play Chariho at home on Wednesday of this week. The Patriots will host Middletown at 6 p.m. Friday, May 9, before traveling to Cranston for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, May 13.
