Team dominates Smithfield, 18-8, in quarterfinals

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Patriots boys’ lacrosse team overwhelmed Smithfield in the Division II quarterfinals on Friday, 18-8.

The 12-4 Patriots, seeded No. 3 in the tournament, advance to play No. 2-seeded Middletown in the semifinals at Gaudet Middle School at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3. 

In Friday’s game against the No. 6-seeded Sentinels, senior Shane Temple led the Patriots’ offense with five goals and an assist. Robert Mairs, also a senior, had four goals, an assist, and eight shots on goal. 

Also scoring for Portsmouth were sophomores Chase Pascoe and Teddy Gersen, with three goals apiece; and senior Jonathan Cabral, sophomore Rafferty Dionne, junior Oliver Melanson, and sophomore H. Dougherty, who each had a goal.

Portsmouth led at halftime, 13-4.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
