PORTSMOUTH — With wins over Prout and Chariho Friday night, the Portsmouth High School boys’ indoor track team made school history by posting its first undefeated regular season in the 25 years the program has been running.

“Congratulations on an amazing and historical accomplishment,” head coach Shaun Horgan told his team in an e-mail sent out to his athletes. “We had 27 personal bests last night — awesome to see.”

The Patriots defeated Prout, 81-28, and Chariho, 71-38, at the meet held at Providence Career & Technical Academy. PHS finished the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record.

Here were the first-place finishers on Friday:

• Nate DeConto, Nick Spaner, Jackson Fox, and Lukas Huffman in the 4x200-meter relay — 1:37.52 (season-best time)

• Landon Rodrigues in the long jump and the 55-meter hurdles — 20 feet, 9.5 inches, and 8.31 seconds, respectively

• Sean Gray in the 1,500-meter run — 4:33.84

• Jae Defalco in the 600-meter run — 1:31.8

• Chris Vachon in the 1,000-meter run — 2:54.27

• Maciej Tabak, Nikolai Loyola, Oliver Tibbetts, and Wake Zani in the 4x400-meter relay — 3:46.79

The PHS boys’ indoor track team program got off to a slow start when it started up in the 1997-98 school year. The team lost every meet in its first three seasons and didn’t post a winning record until 2004-05, when it went 4-2. 

The team has had much greater success in recent years, going 8-1 in 2017-18, 7-1-1 in 2019-20, and 8-1 in 2021-22.
