Portsmouth boys cruise to injury fund win over Islanders
Patriots run away with 84-30 victory
PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Patriots boys’ basketball team didn’t allow its island Division II rivals Middletown to score until five minutes into Thursday night’s injury fund game, and kept the pressure on throughout for a 84-30 blowout.
The game was the second of a doubleheader which also featured the PHS girls’ team, which won the opener against the Islanders, 59-38.
Middletown’s play was marred by turnovers early on, and Portsmouth also dominated the boards which allowed many second chances for the Patriots.
Freshman Elijah Newsome turned in an impressive performance for Portsmouth, recording a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) in only 11 minutes of court time, while also playing strong defense.
Other high scorers for Portsmouth were Ben Hurd (12 points) and Robbie Yates (10 points).
Next up
The Patriots will host Lincoln at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, before hitting the road against Westerly at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20.
They’ll host Holy Name Central Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 23.
