Patriots kick off season with non-league home game Friday

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — The wait is over.

The Portsmouth High School varsity football team’s regular season starts Friday, Sept. 9, with a non-league game against North Kingstown at home. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at the PHS turf field, which has new LED lights this season.

The Portsmouth Gridiron Club will hold a helicopter golf ball drop fund-raising event on the turf field before the game at 5:30 p.m.

The Patriots edged Rogers High School, 6-0, in a two-quarter Injury Fund game on Thursday, Sept. 1, at Tiverton High School.

The defense stepped up for the game, with Evan Tullson intercepting a pass on Rogers’ own 10-yard line to stop the Vikings’ first possession. Portsmouth’s Neal Tullson then ran the ball three straight times before quarterback Luke Brennan kept it on fourth down to score from a yard out. That was the only scoring either team could manage.

The Neal Tullson managed 24 yards on six carries for Portsmouth.

After Friday’s game, Portsmouth stays home to face Westerly at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, before traveling to Bishop Hendricken for a non-lease game on Friday, Sept. 23.
