PORTSMOUTH — A 33-year-old Portsmouth man sustained serious injuries when his motorcycle struck the rear of a stopped pickup truck on East Main Road Friday night, Oct. 4.

According to Detective Lt. John Cahoon of the Portsmouth Police Department, police responded to East Main Road in the area of Sylvania Road at 10:52 p.m. for a report of a motor vehicle accident.

“Upon arrival, officers determined that a 33-year-old Portsmouth man was operating his motorcycle northbound when motorcycle struck the rear of a pickup truck which was stopped in the roadway, waiting to make a turn,” Lt. Cahoon stated in a press release.

The operator of the motorcycle suffered serious injuries and was transported from the scene by the Portsmouth Fire Department to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

The name of the driver was not immediately released.

Members of the Portsmouth Police accident reconstruction team were called to the scene, and East Main Road was closed to traffic for about two hours while the crash was investigated.

The circumstances of the crash are still under investigation, Lt. Cahoon said.
