PORTSMOUTH — A 36-year-old Middletown man has died from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash in the area of West Main Road at the Route 24 North on-ramp last week.
The Portsmouth Police Department learned on Monday that Juan Pablo Garcia Castro had passed away, Deputy Police Chief Michael Morse stated in a press release sent out Tuesday.
At about 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, police responded to the area to investigate a report of an accident involving one motorcycle. Officers were advised that the operator appeared unconscious and unresponsive. The Portsmouth Fire Department also responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, Route 24 North at the on-ramp was closed and all traffic diverted to allow first responders provide aid and to investigate the crash, Morse said.
Garcia Castro was transported by firefighters to St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River and subsequently airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to a preliminary investigation, Garcia Castro was traveling north on West Main Road and entered Route 24 North in the left lane. As the motorcycle entered the curve of the highway, it changed lanes and then struck the guardrail, causing Garcia Castro to be ejected.
“The motorcycle then continued to travel after impact before coming to its final rest,” said Morse. “Mr. Garcia Castro had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.”
The incident remains under investigation by the Portsmouth Police Detective Division and Accident Reconstruction Unit.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Garcia Castro,” Morse stated.
