The John Paul Medeiros Jr. Memorial Cup Hockey Games will be played on Wednesday night, Jan. 8, 2020 at Portsmouth Abbey. This year marks the 18th anniversary of the memorial games.

The girls' game will be played at 6 p.m. and will feature the East Bay Co-op Lady Eagles vs. Mt. St. Charles.

The boys' game starts at 7:30 p.m. and will feature Barrington against Mt. Hope.

Admission is a donation at the door — all proceeds will benefit the JP Medeiros, Jr. Scholarship Fund.

This is the only fund-raiser for the JP Medeiros, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for Eagles and Huskies hockey players — both boys and girls.

In the past 17 years, 74 student-athletes have received awards from the scholarship fund. Last year, Madelyn Cox, Arianna Madeira, Jonathan Medeiros, Cameron Rancourt and Keegan Hanley received JP Medeiros Jr. Memorial Scholarships.

A graduate of Mt. Hope High School, JP Medeiros Jr. played, coached and loved hockey. He had been a member of the Huskies hockey team and was a team captain his senior year. JP was killed in a car accident in 2002.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
